Serigne Gueye

Serigne C. M. Gueye was born in Daker in Senegal in 1963, lifelong encircled by compelling West African music. His grandfather worked as a percussionist for the National Ballet, and was often away from home. As a autodidact Serigne began making a living out of music by playing at traditional ceremonies from the age of seven. His professional career began in 1984 with the ensemble Star Band de Dakar, where he extended his know-how of a wide range of percussion instruments -bugarabu, conga’s, djemé, congoma, talking drum, sauruba, sabar, drums – as well vocal and arrangements. He played with the Star Band de Dakar in 1985/6 and in 1987 he toured in France with Orchestra Baobab. In 1993 he joined Ifang Bondi and appeared at many Festivals including Festival Mondial, in addition he collaborated on two of their CD’s, Tiramakhan and award winning CD Daraja. He left Ifang Bondi in 1996 in order to explore jazz more deeply and to investigate new aveneus to use his West African musical heritage in a much broader context. He appeared at the Norht Sea Jazz Festival in 1998 (Saskia Laroo Band) CD, and in 2000 (Ghasem Batamuntu-Nhova Ghost Band) CD. Serigne C. M. Gueye is a co founder of the Pia Piac Band and established the Mandinkabi band . In 2002 Serigne collaborated with Tobias Delius (sax, clarinet), Wilbert de Joode (double bass) and Hilary Jefferies (trombone) resulting in the formation of Apa Ini (APA INI CD) Serigne played many concert performances with Mola Sylla and Ernst Reijseger wich lead to the production of the CD JANA. Currently Serigne is living in Rotterdam and work’s frequently with many international musicians such as Baaba Maal Roots Festival 2008, Wouter Vandenabeele, Paul Lovens, Issa Sow CD 2009. Seringe played with Sean Bergin, Han Bennink at the Bimhuis. In the summer of 2019, Serigne formed his new band named: Mandingkabi Serigne Cm Gueye:percussion, vocal.
